Pilotage provides the master with specialised navigational advice for port entry, departure and manoeuvring within the service area. It combines local knowledge, manoeuvre planning and operational exchange with the vessel, including coordination with towage, mooring and other port services when required.

The Port Authority’s current technical page states an entrance channel width of 100 m, a length of 700 m, a published depth of 14.0 m at BMVE and a mud seabed; the harbour entrance is listed as 250 m wide with a published depth of 14.0 m. Other official Port publications show different values for channel width and seabed type, so these particulars should be verified against current nautical publications before use in passage or manoeuvre planning.
